KELPA2 Proficiency

Kansas English Language Proficiency Assessment (KELPA2) results are now reported in three Overall Proficiency Levels. Level 3 (Proficient) indicates that a student at the Proficient level can produce grade-level academic content in the English language. For the KELPA2 annual assessment, this means the student scores either a Performance Level 4 or Level 5 on each of the four domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Overall Proficiency Level 2 (Nearly Proficient) indicates that a student at the Nearly Proficient level is approaching the ability to produce grade-level academic content in the English language with support. For the KELPA2 annual assessment, this means the student scores above a Performance Level 2 on one or more domains, but does not yet meet the requirements to be at the Proficient level on the four domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Overall Proficiency Level 1 (Not Proficient) indicates that a student at the Not Proficient level does not yet have the ability to produce grade-level academic content in the English language. For the KELPA2 annual assessment, this means the student scores either a Performance Level 1 or Level 2 in each of the four domains of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Building, district, and state-level reports provide summaries of the percent of students at each performance level. Assessment results capture a point-in-time and represent one part of a student’s and schools’ overall educational experience.
